TD Victoria International JazzFest: An Evening With Pink Martini

Formed just over two decades ago, Portland’s Pink Martini, led by pianist Thomas Lauderdale and with vocalist China Forbes, is a unique 12-piece orchestra. Their multi-cultural repertoire is presented with a mixture of “lounge” panache and effortlessly elegant musical charm. Their musical interests are literally global and are combined with an ability to retrieve neglected musical treasures from past eras that are refashioned in a way that is irresistible to modern ears. With eight CDs released, Pink Martini does songs in a dozen languages and styles, from Cuban rumbas and Brazilian carnival songs to Japanese film music, jazz-inflected swing tunes, torch ballads … and their own inimitable originals. Their 2014 album, Dream A Little Dream, featured descendants of the Von Trapp children from ‘The Sound of Music’. They have performed soldout shows around the world – including prestige engagements at the Cannes Film Festival and the grand opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A. Dapper, glamorous, and full of zesty fun, these Martinis are truly intoxicating. Gavin Bondy trumpet, Robert Taylor trombone, Nicholas Crosa violin, Pansy Chang cello, Maureen Love harp, Phil Baker bass, Dan Faehnle guitar, Timothy Nishimoto vocals/percussion, Brian Davis congas/percussion, Anthony Jones drums/percussion
